Casablanca: installation of a wastewater outfall

The project involved designing and building an outfall at sea for a wastewater treatment plant.

  • Location Casablanca, Morocco

  • Solution Hydraulic and environment infrastructure

  • Key date 2013 - 2014

  • Customer Lydec

The project required a micro-tunnel to cross the rocky seabed of the shallow landing zone, which is exposed to the Atlantic swell. This trenchless method made it possible to preserve the foreshore area’s flora and fauna and meet the client’s schedule by carrying out the excavation operations for the micro-tunnel during the winter period. To meet the constraints of the project, the Geocean team used an innovative ballasting technique using concrete beads to install the HDPE pipe.

Construction and installation:

  • Offshore rock blasting & excavation: 10,000m3
  • Sand dredging 2 x 150,000m3
  • Installation of 518 continuous weight collars
  • Onshore starting shaft: 12m in diameter and 13m deep
  • Micro-tunneling (MTBM) for shore crossing
  • Pipe installation and connection to the micro-tunnel section
  • Diffuser installation
